Innovative aesthetics: illustrated solar panels

A unique technological solution for integrating high-definition images into solar panels has been developed by the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology, with the financial support of the Banque Cantonale Neuchâteloise (BCN), paving the way for a new aesthetic approach to harvesting sunshine.

The first such panels are on display at the KALEO exhibition taking place in the BCN gardens in Neuchâtel, which opened late in June and is accessible throughout the summer on request.

The exhibition features 12 panels with six images, including five portraits by Swiss photographer Guillaume Perret, all of which show people’s facial expressions that radiate energy, and one by student Etienne Wildi, the winner of the KALEO competition.

Over the last few years, thanks to the engagement of public partners such as the Swiss National Science Foundation or the canton of Neuchâtel, CSEM has focused on the development of aesthetic photovoltaic solutions, resulting in its innovations such as white or colored solar panels.

Designed to further Switzerland’s energy strategy ambitions of increasing its solar share from 2,5 % to 20% until 2050, the new illustrated solar panels may also prove particularly useful in the fields such as advertising
